Welcome to Term 2! It looks like our warm weather is now a memory, and the cold, winter months are quickly approaching. We will look forward to working on learning the writing process of research with a goal to complete research papers by Thanksgiving. During the second grading term, students can also look forward to a reader's theater on Ancient Egypt, an IMAX field trip titled The Mysteries of Egypt, and begin comparing story elements of historical fiction with realistic fiction. In November, Team 6-2 students had an opportunity to reflect on the accomplishments made this year during conferences. Several questions came up, and I felt the web page would be an excellent media tool to further explain how we assess in the classroom.
Understanding How We Assess Comprehension
A reading workshop approach offers Team 6-2 language arts teachers a number of ways to assess student comprehension. Some areas require a simple checklist while other means of assessment involve reading aloud, written summaries, oral presentations, etc. Listed below are some examples revised from Patricia Hagerty's Reading Workshop.
-Chooses appropriate books
-Uses appropriate strategies to develop meaning
-Actively participates in shared discussions
-Writes effective journal responses
-Sustains reading for at least 20 minutes
-Reads a variety of genres
-Uses prediction before and during reading
-Reads fluently
-Makes thoughtful, varied responses to reading
-Engages in self-evaluation
-Requests meaningful help in reading
Understanding Language Arts Test Retake Procedures
We have an expectation that students study and achieve a passing score of 75%. When there is an expectation for success the first time of test taking, student motivation for doing well increases. Occasionally, for a number of reasons a student does not meet that expectation, and may achieve a score under 75%. He or she will be given one opportunity to retake the test.
